Festival of Light

Hanukkah at Beth Lechem

Look out the window! It’s almost night!
Bring out the candles, turn off the lights!
Where are our hanukkiahs?
Maybe we left them at Ms. SofiYah’s!
Here they are! Light the first candle.
“Hurry up, people!” shouts Roeh. “It’s not that much to handle!”
We say the blessings after the first candle is lit.
While doing this we never sit!

Roeh’s candle light lights the other.
I say, “He is the light of the world” as I hold my candle out to my mother.
After everyone has said these words,
I get excited and my heart flutters like a bird
Because we get to sing the Hanukkah song.
It’s not that hard; anyone can sing along.
After the song is sung
We get to have lots of fun.

Hanukkah is a time for joy
When dreidels are the main toy.
So I yell, “Go top the table!
We’re about to play dreidels!”

Oh, no! I got “nun”.
Oh, well; I’ll get “gimel” soon!
Yes, it’s my turn again.
In order to get “gimel” I have to make this a special spin.

Yes, I got “gimel”; I take all.
It was all fun and games until I heard my mom call,
“Come on, girls! It’s time to go!”
We all say at the same time, “Oh, no!”
As we walk out the door
My heart is filled with sorrow
But my face lights up when I remember
We’ll see them tomorrow.
